GB2RS AMATEUR RADIO NEWS BROADCAST
----------------------------------
This information is prepared by the Radio Society of Great
Britain and broadcast each Sunday on the 80, 40, and 2 metre bands
by stations in all parts of the country.
Here is the GB2RS news broadcast for Sunday the 14th September.
We begin this week with the solar factual data for the period
between the 1st and the 7th September. There was a small amount of
solar activity during this period and a small sunspot count every
day. Solar flux levels were very stable and averaged 68 units. In
this context it's worth noting that the last few solar minima
bottomed out at 66 units. As expected, geomagnetic activity declined
and the A index averaged 8 units, although the 7th was down to a
quiet level of only 5 units. The solar wind particle input was
extremely low and no Inda index data was received this week. The
monthly mean sunspot number for July 186 was 0.8 and this was the
lowest since 1954.
And now the ionospheric data for England and Wales.
The F2 critical frequencies at Appleton averaged 5.9 MHz, they
varied between 6.7 MHz on the 2nd and 5.2 MHz on the 5th. Sporadic E
up to blanketing levels were reported on the 4th and 6th, lasting
about % hours on both days. The darkness hour lows averaged 2.4 MHz
and the day to day variations were very small.
And now the ionospheric data for Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Some data for this period was not recorded because of equipment
failure at South Uist. The daylight hour F2 critical frequencies
averaged 5.4 Mhz, the best days were the 2nd and 3rd, which were up
to 5.7 MHz. The darkness hour lows averaged 1.8 MHz. There was
blanketing sporadic E for 7 hours on the 5th and 4 hours on the 6th.
Some spread F was also reported at various times, mostly early
mornings.
And now the national solar forecast. Solar activity is again
expected to be very low this week and solar flux levels are not
expected to change. The geomagnetic levels are expected to be
unsettled for most of the time and to reach a peak around sub storm
level on the 8th. The disturbance is due to two regions which have a
reversed bipolar magnetic configuration close to the sun's equator
and also to a recurrent coronal hole.
Ionospheric conditions are expected to decline as the week
proceeds because of the higher geomagnetic activity. F2 critical
frequencies in the north could fall to around 4.5 MHz during the
hours of daylight - this corresponds to a M.U.F. of 14 MHz. Darkness
hours could well be affected by higher absorption levels.
F2 critical frequencies in the south are expected to be around
5.1 MHz, corresponding to M.U.F.s around 18MHz, by the 18th and the
darkness hour lows are likely to be about 2.2 MHz. Higher noise
levels may well be noticed. Severe absorption around the 18th might
be expected, especially during hours of darkness.
Now the rest of the news. First of all, details of two rallies
which take place next Sunday, 21st September. The National Car Boot
Sale will be held at Old Warden Airfield, Near Biggleswade in
Bedfordshire. Old Warden is the home of the famous Shuttleworth
Collection of Historic Aircraft and Vehicles. The event opens at
10am and closes at 5pm and talk in will be available via GB4SC on
S22. Restaurant, cafe and bar facilities will be available and there
will be plenty of space for the sale of amateur radio equipment. For
more information and advance bookings, contact Phil Morris on
Dunstable 607623.
The other rally taking place next Sunday is the Harlow Rally,
which is now in its 28th year. The venue for the rally is the Harlow
Sports Centre and the event opens at 10am. There there will be free
parking, a trade show, exhibits by special interest groups, a bring
and buy stand, a licensed bar and refreshments. Talk in will be
available on S22.
Next some Raynet news. Because of the resignation of Ivor Shaw
G3KWT and John Arrowsmith G4IWA, there are vacancies for Raynet
Zonal Representatives in Zones 2 and 9. Zone 2 consists of North,
South and West Yorkshire together with North and South Humberside.
Zone 9 is formed of Staffordshire, Shropshire, West Midlands,
Warwickshire and Hereford and Worcester. Raynet members registered
in zones may forward a nomination for their zonal representative to
the Secretary (Raynet), at RSGB H.Q. Nominations should be supported
by 5 Raynet members who are currently registered within the zone and
they must be received not later than 5:15 pm on Friday the 31st
October. They should be accompanied by a declaration that the
nominee is normally resident within the zone, is currently a
registered Raynet member and is willing to serve if elected. The
period of appointment is normally 3 years. If more than one
nomination is received by th specified date an election will be held
during the month of December.
Now some information for users of the 144 MHz repeater GB3PO
located near Ipswich. Because of routine testing of the electrical
wiring at the repeater site GB3PO may be subject to interruption of
its service between the 15th and 26th of September. The
interruptions will occur without warning but it is hoped that they
will be kept to a minimum. Full service will be restored after the
26th of September.
Now follows a list of Morse Test centres which are taking
bookings in October and November. Places are strictly on a first
come first served basis. The deadlines for applications for the
first batch of tests is the 3rd of October.

Since the 1st August, the Society has had its own amateur radio
database on Prestel, starting at page 8107. At present there are
more than 400 frames of information and the diversity and volume are
increasing daily. Page 810750 gives information on the latest
updates. Information to go on Prestel can either be sent via the
Society's mailbox on 070759015 or by post to Jennifer Goldsmith at
RSGB H.Q. The database on Prestel is the same as that on the
Society's DataBox: access to Prestel should be easier and cheaper
for most users, although it is necessary to join Prestel
Microcomputing user group.
There are a couple of special event stations to listen for this
week. One is GB2SMW from the Science Museum's other site at
Wroughton Airfield, near Swindon. This station will be operating
today on HF and VHF: They are also said to be using amateur
television and packet radio. Also, the GB4XXX DXpedition to North
Wales will be operational between the 18th and 22nd September. The
group intends to operate on all HF bands and on 70 MHz - they will
be located at IO72TV. Also, the Southgate ARC will be operating
GB4EMC from Enfield Town Show on the 20th and 21st September. They
will be active on all HF bands, with an emphasis on 80 metres and
also on 144 MHz. Operating hours will be 1 pm to 6 pm on both days.
Don't forget to listen for GB stations with the suffix HMP,
which are being run throughout September by members of Her Majesty's
Prison Service. These stations are being sponsored throughout the
Prison Service to benefit The Great Ormond Street Children's
Hospital, so do give them a call if you hear them on.
That concludes the main news
